Quick hits

• My dad came to five after five! The food and wine samples were ok--they've definitely been better--but it was awesome having him there with my friends, seeing how I spend my Friday nights.
• The Reds, after getting mauled by the Cardinals last week in three straight games, swept the Marlins this weekend to regain first place. Take that, St. Louis!
• Finally, I'm having a quiet night at home. Tomorrow, write write write.

Edited to add that I put my senior writing project on the wordpress site. I read the stories now and think of them as practice for bigger and better things!

Very, Very Quick hits

• I tied for second in the Oscar pool Sunday. Should've gone with the tide and picked Sandra Bullock!
• I went to bed at 8:30 last night and woke at 5am. More sleep than I've gotten in ages.
• My lovely nana is in the hospital with pancreatitis (the kind caused by gull stones, not excessive alcohol); she's in good spirits.

Zach, Nana, and Jonah a couple of Thanksgivings ago. My brothers have very nice smiles, but here they are making their "ugh my sister is making us pose" faces :)

I can hardly believe there are only four days left in February. I've had neither the time nor inclination to write lately, but this should pass soon. I have an inbox full of articles that I've sent to myself for one reason or another; the Jobs bill passed with bipartisan support last night; and later this week is a health care summit that's sure to be great political theater.

• My dad leaves next Monday. He just got here! Nana says it was God's gift that he was home during snomageddon.
• Class is going fine - we missed a couple Tuesdays for the snopocolypse, but since we meet twice a week, we've been able to compensate.
• I've been watching a lot of Olympics. I'm as rah-rah unpatriotic as they come--I love my country, appreciate my freedoms, but I get unsettled when I hear "God bless the USA," and think, "Why are we so special? What about everyone else?"--but I've really enjoyed seeing the Americans win gold medals. From Shani Davis to Lindsay Vonn to Evan Lysacek and Shawn White, I hope we crush the Germans and the Canadians in the medal count!

• A student said to me, after thanking me for the class, "You don't give yourself enough credit." And I immediately thought, man, I must be projecting some serious insecurities if I have students trying to help me buck up!
• I leave on Saturday!
• My car's a mess of old City Beats, blankets, a pair of shoes, three coffee mugs.
• My living room floor's a mess, too. I'm sitting in the middle of it, down blanket and laptop covering me, with a space heater aimed at me. I'm still cold.
• Just watched the last forty minutes of Days of Our Lives... I've watched it off and on since I was probably ten, when Carly was buried alive and Marlena was possessed by the devil. Who am I to judge you for watching Dancing with the Stars?
• I don't remember the last time I've had real food in my house (unless granola bars and coffee count as real food).
• That Skyline 3-way I just finished sure was good.

It's another rainy day in Cincinnati. I'm rather enjoying the gloominess and mild temperatures as well as the legitimate excuse to avoid running. (And I can wear my Kenya scarves).

I'm off to work in a few minutes, but here's a quick update:

• No movement on the MFA front; the end of the quarter is kicking my butt, and I haven't had time to focus on researching schools, putting together portfolios, and gathering references.
• There are still not enough hours in the day. Supposedly sleep helps keep colds at bay. I decided a while ago that a full-night's sleep was key to my mental stability, and now there's evidence that I have that sleep to thank for my relatively good health these past few years.
• The Reds have been winning a lot lately; why couldn't they have done that in June and August???
• I'm psyched that the Bengals are 1-1. This city, as pessimistic as we get about the Bengals, will absolutely explode with joy and excitement if the Bengals make a playoff run.

I love that moment in a day when I stop worrying about class, work, family, and the world. Unfortunately that hasn't happened in a while. But I've been "good" busy, lately, as opposed to "anxious" busy.

So, I'll take a cue from one of my blogger friends and give some quick hits:

• I saw "Julie and Julia" last night with my mom. Meryl Streep was divine has Julia Child, and it was wonderful recognizing so many places in Paris!
• I'm boycotting Whole Foods. This seriously alters my Friday evenings, but the store's CEO penned an op-ed piece in the Wall Street Journal against health care reform. If he hadn't realized who shops there (liberal, educated democrats), he does now!
• My dad leaves on Monday. I'm getting ready to take the reins on the website, a facebook fan site, and a twitter...
• Headed to the Reds game tonight. I'll bring my camera and upload any good pics!
